Data Protection as a Driver of Rwanda’s Digital Economy

Today the Data Protection & Privacy Office (DPO) joined NetFella in a cybersecurity conversation themed “Securing Our Digital Future: Safeguarding Rwanda’s Economy.” The session brought together key stakeholders from government, private sector, academia, and civil society to discuss how strong data protection practices can build trust and drive economic growth in Rwanda’s digital ecosystem.

During our presentation, we unpacked Rwanda’s Data Protection and Privacy Law, highlighting its core principles and practical implications. The DPO explained the distinction between data controllers and processors, emphasized the recognition of privacy as a fundamental human right, and outlined how organizations must handle sensitive personal data responsibly. We also discussed the rights of data subjects and the lawful grounds for processing personal information, ensuring that participants understood both their obligations and the protections afforded to individuals.

The DPO urged organizations particularly SMEs, who are often most vulnerable to take compliance seriously and integrate the law’s requirements into their daily operations. We stressed that ignorance is not an excuse, and that proactive compliance not only avoids penalties but also strengthens customer trust, competitiveness, and resilience in the digital economy
