DPO hosted discussions on Safeguarding Personal Data

Today, the Data Protection Office (DPO) hosted a webinar on “Understanding and Implementing Data Protection Principles”, bringing together Data Protection Officers from different organizations. The session focused on Rwanda’s Data Protection and Privacy Law (No. 058/2021) and outlined the importance of safeguarding personal data in today’s digital era.

Participants were guided through seven key principles: lawfulness, transparency, purpose limitation, data minimization, accuracy, storage limitation, integrity, and accountability. These principles form the foundation of responsible data management and ensure that organizations handle personal information ethically and securely.

The webinar emphasized that compliance is more than meeting legal obligations, it strengthens trust, efficiency, and competitiveness across sectors while promoting ethical data use. Ultimately, data protection was highlighted as a culture of accountability and trust, essential for building confidence and fostering innovation.
