The Data Protection Office (DPO) held a webinar on Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), drawing over 350 participants. It focused on Rwanda’s DPIA guide and stressed how DPIAs help assess data processing risks and ensure compliance, especially in high-risk cases like sensitive data or automated decisions.
DPIAs were presented as vital for protecting privacy and constitutional rights. The session clarified when DPIAs are mandatory and how they support responsible, lawful data handling across various processing operations.
“DPIAs are more than just a legal requirement, they serve as a practical tool to identify risks early, protect individuals’ rights, and build confidence in how we handle data. By approaching them strategically, we can move beyond mere compliance to fostering trust and innovation.” Ms. Eliane Sebakiga, DPO staff delivering her remarks.
