A recap of a Webinar on Cross-Border Data Transfer and Storage

Today, Data Protection and Privacy Office (DPO) Rwanda hosted a webinar on how to ensure compliance with personal data Protection and privacy law in cross-border data transfer and storage. It brought together more than 150 Data Protection Officers (DPOs), Compliance Officers, Legal Officers, and IT professionals from public and private sector organizations.

This webinar provided legal and practical foundations on cross-border data transfer and storage, focusing on Rwanda’s data protection law and global standards. It presented practical tools like contractual clauses, risk assessments, and compliance checklists. Experts shared case studies and strategies to help Data Protection Officers navigate challenges, improve compliance, and ensure secure data management.

“In today’s interconnected digital economy, the movement of personal data across borders is not just a business need, it’s a necessity. However, this movement must be governed by legal and ethical standards that protect individuals and ensure accountability.”

— Mr. Eraste Rurangwa, Head of DPO Rwanda

“Data protection laws are not in place to stop businesses from operating; however, they are there to support them to operate responsibly and sustainably. Compliance with the laws helps businesses build and maintain trust with customers, who rightly expect their personal information to be treated with care.”
